Online Documentation for SQL Administrator for SQL Server

Backup devices

A Backup device is a tape drive or a disk drive used in backup and restore operations. When creating a backup, you must select a backup device where the data will be written. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (and higher) can back up databases, transaction logs, and files to disk and tape devices.

Use the context menu or buttons on the work area toolbar to manage the list of maintenance plans:

Create create a new backup device

Edit edit selected backup device

Drop drop selected backup device

  • rename selected backup device
  • create the object copy on the same server
  • clone the object copy to another server

Print create and print the report

Alternatively, you can use the 'Insert' button to create a backup device, 'Enter' button to edit backup device(s) and 'Delete' button to drop backup device(s).

Backup - Backup devices

The list displays the existing database backup devices as a grid with the following columns: Device Name, Device Type, Physical Name. If more convenient, you can change the order of the columns by dragging their headers horizontally. See the Working with grid section of the SQL Administrator documentation to find out operations that can be performed with the grid.

To open a Backup Device in the Backup Device Editor, double-click it in the grid. Alternatively, you can right-click the  Backup Device alias and select the Edit Backup Device(s) context menu item.

Use the +/- icons near the device name to expand/collapse device properties: device header and device contents.

You can launch the Restore Database Wizard when viewing device contents: right-click a backup and then select the Restore_SQLAdmin Restore item of the context menu.

If you click the zoom button then the Device Header and Device Contents tabs will be expanded.
